Description

This is Axe a collaboration piece between Petr Florianek and myself.

I made the axe and Petr carved the Wyrm carvings on both sides. Petr is a wonderfully talented smith based in the Czech republic, our collaborations are amongst the best pieces I make. I’m always exited to see what Petr has come up with.

This Damascus Edged Dane axe is forge welded up from two billets of steel. The body of the axe is forged from one piece of mild steel that has. The eye is made by forging down the steel and then bending the eye shape and forge welding the eye steel back to the body of the axe. The eye is finished with a side forge weld, this is a traditional method for making axes during the Viking age. The edge steel is 150 layers folded and forge welded around the blade body making 300 layers at the edge. The pattern in the Damascus is formed when the hammering used to make the axe pushed layers beneath each other, the process of the making is written in the steel!

The axe edge is thicker than the material behind it keeping strength at the edge of the blade. This is a hefty axe, a monster hunter or shield breaker. I am offering this axe without a haft if you would like a haft made for this axe please contact me.
