Description
Saxon pattern welded Spatha
This is a Bronze, horn and bog oak hilted Anglo Saxon Spatha.
This is a patternwelded Anglo Saxon spatha, the sword is hilted with bog oak from east Anglia (at least 3000 years old, but stabalised to preserv it) and wonderfully translucent variegated horn spacers, the guard is tin bronze and the pommel is tin bronze and carved and cast by the talented Czech craftsman Yan Bana (Storrvara). he has done an amazing job, i really like Yan’s carving. he has a habit of improving on original pieces that really impressed me. As part of my Qest scholarship i went and spent a week learning under Jan learning wax carving and casting. the experience was invaluable and I learned a lot of new skills, however i came from the experience with the conclusion that i really should get Jan to make more fittings for me!
The pommel is based on a pommel in the British museum
the laste 7th century find from Crundale in Kent a pommel of pyramidal ‘cocked hat’ form, decorated on both faces with Style II ‘biting-beasts’ Held at the British museum , museum number 1894,1103.1.a
This is a 29.5″ long sword blade with lenticular section. The blade is constructed from 3 intermittently twisted core bars showing alternate straight and twisted sections. The 3 steels used in its construction can be seen as bright layers and 2 darker shades. There is a high layer Damascus steel edge of around 400 layers.
I would be happy to make a scabbard for this sword please enquire.
