Description
This seax is named Twisted River because there is a Twisted patternwelded river running through the blade.
The Seax is a 4 bar construction. However really its a bit more complicated than that!
There is a layer of Vintage church bell clapper wrought iron on the spine . The main body of the blade is made from Carbon steel with an undulating Twisted steel River running through it. There is a lot of manipulation of the material and bits added and some bits taken away to get the pattern to undulate along the blade. This is one possibility for the way that the snake like pattern in Saxon blades were made. This Seax is made using the same techniques that are used in the making of legendary Saxon and Viking swords. The blade shows some Autohamon (diferential hardening) effects with patches of steel giving some clue that the make up of the blade is more complicated than it looks.
Broken back seax blades have a very distinctive and stylized geometry, seax are often thicker at the broken back and taper in both directions in thickness, I have kept this blade thin to keep the blade light but it follows the same form. The Anglo Saxon broken back seax is the iconic tool and weapon of the Saxon. And found almost exclusively in the UK. Historically the blades have lots of subtle differences in profile but often share communality with the broken back part of the blade being the thickest.
This Seax has a forged copper ferrule around the beautiful burled Elm handle
The sheath is oak tanned leather with copper fittings and a forge welded iron ring.
