Description

Double Edged Bronze hilted Pattern welded sword.

30-inch bladed, double-edged sword. Weighs 2lb 9oz POB is 4.5 inches into the blade

Material: the blade is made from 15N20 carbon steel, En42J carbon steel and cs80 carbon steel, the handle is veg tanned leather over ash and fittings are tin bronze.

This single-handed double-edged inspired by carvings on Kilpeck church in the Golden valley in Herefordshire.

The blade is patternwelded from 10 bars of steel. The core of the sword consists of 4 twisted bars separated from each other by dark pin stripes, the two core bars are intermittent twists with pin-striped layers in between, the outer two bars are continuous twists. The 700-layer edge shows subtle patterning and adds to the understated complexity of the twists. My favourite patternwelding has elements that can be seen from a distance and then subtle patterning in the steel that draw you in, careful or you may become lost in the steel!

The guard and Pommel are made By Petr Florianek, both being carved in wax and then cast in Tin bronze (also known as ancient bronze) Petr came up with the design for the pommel and guard after visiting Kilpeck church with me as part of our annual artists retreat in 2023.  Kilpeck church is a wonderfully carves church dating from the end of the Saxon age nestled in the golden valley in Herefordshire. The golden Valley in Hereford is a wonderful place oozing with ancient landscape with red soil and rolling hills. I’m drawn back there time and again where the imagination can grow in deep red soil in the shadow of the black mountains. the golden valley is supposedly the place that  Tolkien based his “shire” on.

The sword has a good balance to it the point of balance is 4.5” into the blade and would be a great cutter, without feeling too blade heavy.

I would be happy to make a Scabbard for this sword please enquire for a price.
