Description
This Cleaver is collaboration between Petr Florianek and myself. Petr is a good friend and talented Bladesmith he works from his workshop out side of Prague, he has a wonderful imagination and is a very thorough knowledge of historical forms as well as the fantastical. I really love our collaborations and they represent some of the best Work I’m involved in Making. In this case my cleaver blade was just the canvas for Petr to work his magic on.
In our collaborations Petr and myself think of our work together like the work of the Dark elves from Norse myth ( Dökkálfar) or possibly the Dwarves or elves from Middle earth. We are trying to make legendary pieces with the work of our hands that transcend the mundane and exist in the world of legends.
The blade is patternwelded, there is wrought iron at the spine then there are barbed chevron bars, these are mosaic bars made from many teeth . Could they be the infamous Durin’s teeth pattern so famous in ancient times? The edge bar is heavily laddered 300-layer random Damascus and has an undulating chatoyancy along the edge.
With such relics it can be hard to fathom if the Goblin cleaver is a cleaver made by Goblins or a Cleaver for cleaving Goblins…..I think the latter.
Tis a dirty business fighting Goblins, down in the deep places, down in the dark. Dodging goblin teeth, and goblin blade. Beneath the mountain Rock and deep tree root, a fight with Axe and Cleaver, head and Boot. No Elven sword for the close dark places but a sturdy blade to hack and hew, Goblin Cleaver …Goblin cleaved.
Petr Florianek made the handle and Sheath with intricate carvings and bronze and antler. This cleaver has a handle made from wood that has been bound in leather and edged with carved bronze. The pommel consists of 2 parts, there is a fierce Face carved into antler with Garnet eyes, and then a carved peen block in wrought iron.
The sheath is Oak tanned leather, that has carved Knot work in the leather and Bronze.
