Description
No prior experience is needed and the class will guide you through:
- Using a gas forge
- Forging the blade to shape
- Thermocycling (reducing grain growth, which is an undesirable effect of over heating steel)
- Blade shaping, using grinder file and abrasive paper
- Heat treating
- Blade finishing, sharpening, and edge testing
- Fitting a simple handle.
The blades you make will be made from EN42J high carbon steel (or similar)
We will concentrate on finishing a single kitchen knife blade over the 3 days and will fit it to a handle.
You will go away with your own finished hand forged kitchen knife, fully ground and sharpened. We also make a smaller blade as a practice piece to get used to the forging process. There won’t be time to finish this practice blade, but we have pre made handles available to purchase should you wish to take it home finished. I like to make my kitchen knives elegant and thin and we will be forging and grinding to make you a knife that will grace your kitchen for a lifetime.
If you would like the option to make your kitchen knife with damascus steel (twisted or random) or with a burlwood/walnut handle, this can be added as a purchase option. Some students like to take the 3 Day Damascus class before this class to use their own-made damascus to forge their kitchen knife.
The course day runs from 9am - 5pm.
Safety equipment is provided for all the classes but please ensure that you have non-flamable clothing and sturdy shoes (preferably leather). No shell suits, fleeces or synthetic flammable materials (cotton and wool are perfect).
