This is Axe a collaboration piece between Petr Florianek and myself.
I made the axe and Petr carved Dragon Knot work on each side the blade. Petr is a wonderfully talented smith based in the Czech republic; our collaborations are amongst the best pieces I make. I’m always exited to see what Petr has come up with.
The axe was one of the predominant weapons of the Viking age. This is a single-handed axe It is fast and light, the whole axe head and handle weighing in at 1lb 15oz. the head is around a pound in weight.
This axe head is made from Mild steel forge welded around a core of carbon steel; this is one of the traditional methods of constructing an axe. The axe is oil hardened and tempered and comes sharp.
I carved the handle from is made from rippled ash that has been fire blackened.
