5 Day Japanese Sword Making Techniques Masterclass with Jesus Hernandez: 13th-17th Sep 2021

COVID-19 I am now running my courses with social distancing and sanitation measures in place with limited student numbers to 5 on all classes. There will be more spaces available on every course once restrictions have been lifted. Please email for details or sign up to the mailing list so we can let you know when we have scheduled more courses.

This is a 5 day masterclass taught by Jesus Hernandez looking at Japanese sword making techniques in particular clay quenching blades to produce Hamon (differential hardening effects in the blade made by quenching)

You will grind and harden a number of Japanese style blades.

To secure a place on this course a 50% deposit is required, the remainder being payable one month before the course begins. Alternatively, you may pay the full amount on booking.

3 Spaces Available

Pay a deposit of £550.00 per item

No prior experience is needed and the class will guide you through :

  • Choosing steels that will produce a good Hamon
  • Look at experimenting with hamon on a new steel using test pieces
  • Looking at the variables that effect the production of Hmaon, matching clay to quenchant to steel
  • Grinding blades and altering blade geometry and how it effects Hamon
  • Quenching blades
  • Grinding to reveal hamon and set blade geometry.
  • Polishing steps using modern abrasives to reveal Hamon
  • The use of etching to reveal Hamon
  • Looking at the scientific reasons as to why things happen the way they do

“Jesus is one of the most thoughtful makers I know, his work is both subtle and deeply beautifull. He has done amazing Viking patternwelding (using a computer to deconstruct the patterns) and wonderful work on celtic Falcata. But he is best know for his work with Japanese swords both in monosteel and his own bloomery steel. He has pursued many martial arts and was a Shinkendo instructor for several years. His understanding of the myriad of different techniques that interplay when hardening steel to create Hamon is second to none.”

During this 5 day class it is our intention to teach you everything Jesus knows about HAMON.  “We want you to go back home and be able to create beautiful and stunning hamon patterns with the practical and theoretical knowledge gathered at this class. And to be able to do so not only because you learn how to clay coat a blade but because you knew why you were doing it.”

We will prep some blade blanks and understand the importance of steel choice and blade profile in hamon development. We will prep some clay and understand the importance of clay composition, thickness and layout. We will work through the magic of clay designs and how the affect the final hamon pattern from no clay to intricate designs. We will learn the principles of yaki-ire: the hardening process both in oil and water. Finally, will learn how to polish and etch the blade to show the most intricate details of the hamon.
