This is a 3 day course that will cover the basics of making pattern welded steel, or Damascus steel as it is commonly known.
We will cover :
- Choosing steels that will give good pattern
- Making up a billet (stacked layers of alternating types of steel forge welded together)
- Use of flux
- Welding by hand and using a fly press as well as the power hammer
- Pattern manipulation by twisting and surface manipulations (grinding or forging into the bar to expose layers)
- Etching to reveal the pattern
Damascus steel is my passion and I am very happy to be offering this course as it is one of those things that is much easier to do when someone who knows how to do it, shows you.
We will use different steels to observe the effects of manganese, nickel, chrome and carbon on the pattern and etching in ferric chloride. I do not believe in welding up scrap when teaching people Damascus.
The course will be held from Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9 am to 4.30pm.
Max of 6 students
The cost of this course is £320
